On Thursday, November 5th Eversource requested, and on Friday, November 6th the Connecticut Public Utility Regulatory Authority approved a 14% rate hike in electric prices effective January 1st, 2021.
"We recognize the effect higher electricity prices can have on our customers, especially during these unprecedented times with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and we want to help them better manage their energy use," Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Penni Conner said in a statement.
PURA officials defended the increase by noting that it was a smaller increase than they have approved in previous years.
The Community Gazette reached out to Senator Norman Needleman, Chair of the Connecticut General Assembly Energy and Technology Committee and Raghib Allie-Brennan, Vice Chair of the Connecticut General Assembly Energy and technology Committee. Neither provided a comment prior to press time.
